Quilting On the Go! - Quilting"Scrap" Book
When traveling, many quilters are always looking for quilt shops along the route—no matter what the destination. We found a scrapbook album with pages that are actually long, sturdy envelopes (theWire-O Album from 7Gypsies). Although originally made for scrapbookers, we think it’s perfect for carrying notes, swatches, and materials lists when you’re fabric shoppingg Buy a book from Rosebud's Cottage quilt shop, plus get ideas for decorating your book from designerRoseann Meehan Kermes and Linda Lum DeBono.
We just had to share this great idea from reader Rene Y., Ashville, NY. "Hello Heidi, I am a quilt teacher from New York. I just came back from Arizona. Three days on the train going out, and three days back. You must tell your readers the advantages of quilting on a train. No restrictions. I took some applique work with me. I had real scissors, needles, pins, the whole works. You could probably rotary cut if you wanted to. Much, much more room. There is a fold down table on the seat in front of you and I glued and sewed to my hearts content. I got quite a bit of sewing done and met a few fellow quilters too. The best part is bringing your own snacks! Even if you bring pop, you bring your own cooler (individual size, 6-pick) and they will give you ice. There is a lounge car with lots of windows and great light for quilting a small lap quilt! My one carry on bag had all my sewing gear, the other had my clothes and personal items. It was like having my own personal quilt retreat. You can even use your cell phone if you really want to be disturbed. When you go on a long trip they put you in a different car with all the other long-haul people and you have a seat to yourself 99% of the time. I loved it.
Happy Quilting on the Rails -- Amtrak I love you!"
My favorite tool for quilting on the go is "Quilt Patis". I always keep some along with scraps of fabric with me. You can cover the patis anywhere. I have even covered patis while on the freeway, in the driver's seat, when we were stopped 3+ hours for an accident clean up. All of the engines were off and the men were outside pacing and cussing... me? getting some work done. The time went so much faster than waiting & watching.
Hugs & Pieces, Pati
I made a lap quilt for my aunt's 60th birthday-"turning 20 again". In order to complete the project in time for the surprise party, I quilted it on my hoop. Most of the quilting was done while my husband drove the van on our vacation from Illinois to Florida and back. The only problem was sore fingers from continuous quilting. Trudy
