Hello and help
Dec 24 2007, 11:20 AM EST
I hope this site allows those of us that want to try machine quilting. I have done little projects by hand and machine but have recently purchased a HQ frame. This is not the new model. I need someone who can tell me the width of this set-up. I plan to set it on 2 4ft. tables for now and will expand if I figure out where to put it. How much room do I need at the ends for easier mobility. I obviously have not seen the frame yet as I purchased it on-line. Any info and encouragement is appreciated. Do you find this valuable?

I'd surf on over to Yahoogroups. There is at least one (maybe more) group with 400 members that is just about Handi Quilter. Yahoogroups.com has many, many great groups on quilting and sewing - many have very specific interests... I belong to several where I can indulge in my interest in vintage sewing machines!

What type of machine will you use with your HandiQuilter? The only problem these small, household or mid-arm set ups have is the limited throat space for quilting! You can't quilt a design larger than the distance from the needle to the roll under the machine arm. They are wonderful for random free motion designs, but are virtually impossible to use with large block designs - as you must figure out how to do the designs in parts... Good Luck.

My suggestion to you is to visit the HQ website or call their customer service number and ask for a dealer near you. There are many dealers who are quilt shops and are very willing to help someone who is beginning, or like you, purchased a older model. I have done this myself with different sewing machines and long arm/mid arm. Most are very accomodating. They may charge you a slight fee, but in the end, it will be worth it! Good Luck.
