Yardage is always going to depend on how closely you quilt, just outline or lots of crosshatch and stipple. 800-2000 yards I would estimate. I usually use about 3-500 yd spools per quilt, I like theme stipple in my backgrounds. I do a lot of dimensional applique so any left over quilting thread is used making gathered blossoms and ruching. It is stronger than regular thread.

Thank you for the reply. A friend had asked an Amish Lady to quilt a quilt for her, and the quote was so much per yard of thread. The quilt is kingsize so the cost will be up there, but nice hand quilting takes time! Thanks again for your reply. I will give her the info. Have a great day. marilynsews

Can anyone recommend a good handquilting needle? I have been using Richard Hemming Large Eye #10 , but they seem to bend fairly easily and I'm going through needles fast.

Needle size and brand preference is going to vary quilter to quilter. I gave up on those gnats eyebrow needles years ago as I can break them taking them out of the package. I have two favorites, both size 9. John James Quilting and Richard Hemming Betweens. Both are sharp, and sturdy enough to stand up to serious quilting action.
