Quilt Block Exchange
Aug 7 2008, 5:35 PM EDT | Post edited: Aug 7 2008, 5:35 PM EDT
Any one interested in a block exchange? I led one several years ago and enjoyed meeting new quilters as well as receiving some great quilt blocks.
If any interest, I will be happy to host.

I would be delighted to participate. Am currently working on several Civil War and Underground Railroad quilts, and would be happy to exchange blocks in a good exchange. Let me know when you get it up and running. Do you find this valuable?

What seems like a hundred years back, I moderated several swaps on AOL. I went back to work in 1999 and have just retired. I'm ready to do start swapping again, and I hope you'll take part in the fun.

There will be two swaps each month. One swap requires no sewing and might involve sending 2 ½ inch strips. The second swap will involve stitching an easy peasy block. Join as many or as few months as you choose. No swap is tied to another. Each swap is your individual choice. The general guidelines will be the same each month for both swaps. These simple and easy swaps are open to newbies or those experienced quilters, too. Our only requirement is that your contribution is accurate.

To ensure high quality fabrics with blocks that integrate easily, the fabric will be a certain designer per month. Please let me know which designers you would like to trade.

I'll start with the first couple of months until I hear from you.

January no sew swap: Recipe for Friendship by Mary Engelbreit 5" squares (six different squares to a set)

January sewing swap: Recipe for Friendship by Mary Engelbreit to make easy 5" unfinished four-patch blocks. (six different four patches to a set using a light and a dark per set)

February no sew swap: 2.5 noodles in Recess by American Jane (six different noodles to a set)

February sewing swap: Ten-inch unfinished squares in Recess by American Jane. Pattern is Five Stripes alternating three colors of 2.5 strips within each square. (six different squares per one set)

Centralized swap sending your swap to Oklahoma City to arrive by 25th of each month. Return items to you by first of each month. Number of sets per individual to be determined by number of people swapping.

Better guidelines pending your interest. Hope you'll trade with us!

kathi

Dottye,

Any quilt store will have these fabrics. I wanted to choose something common to all areas, so no one would have a problem. The fabrics will also be easily attainable online. http://www.desperatequilters.com/cgi-bin/Store/store.cgi
http://www.fatquartershop.com/Recess-American-Jane-Moda-Fabrics-Quilt-Fabric-Fat-Quarter-Bundles.asp?Shopper_id=4782123106204782&Store_id=499
I order from both of these online stores all the time. In addition, there are many other online stores--lots of this fabric available. So. . ., please join us.

Hope to see you trading,

Let me know if I got this right. I did the exact amounts as you because a) I assume you did it to get the most out of the fabric or you found a good way to put these all together when they are done, and b) in case anyone else doesn't sign up by Jan!

Dear Iva,

Since all exchanges have slight variances, we will all need the guidelines as we go along.

Step one for right now is to watch for the fabrics. Charm sqaures or yardage you cut yourself into 5" squares from Recipe for Friendship. Six different 5" squares equals one trade or set. You may trade as many sets as we have participants. The squares may repeat per each set that you decide to trade.

If you choose to do the sewn block, it is a light and a dark from Recipe for Friendship made into a four patch. Each four patch will be unfinished at 5" using two fabrics. A set is six different sqares. The squares may repeat if you do a second or third set.

You may do either or both swaps for January.

In like manner, watch for a sale for Recess by American Jane. They will have precut noodles, or you can cut yardage yourself more economically. A 2.5″ noodle would be a strip that has 2.5″ wide by the width of fabric, which usually ranges between 40″ - 44″.

In February, if you choose to stich some squares, you will be using three different Recess fabrics per square. . .Strip color one, strip color two, strip color three, strip color two, strip color one.

Mail your trade to me to be received by the 25th of each month. You will also enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope for your returning squares. Your new trades will be mailed to you on or before the first of the following month. You will love this process. I always get excited getting all the goodies in the mail. I remember each of my "trade/exchange quilts" so fondly.

More patterns details to come as needed.

Sincerely,
kathi

I have never done an exchange. Could you explain what "sets" denote and why you used different numbers of sets for each month in your last post? Anxious to get started. My mom used to do this, but she is now deceased, and I don't know all of the parameters and guidelines. Thanks. Do you find this valuable?

Jaimie,

You give me waaayyy too much credit. I will send links soon for the simple patterns I glanced at; but I have no game plan.

I just wanted to make good use of the fabric and check out quilting square desires before getting any more difficult. Shoofly, nine patch, log cabin, and a plethora more can be accurately pieced by all of us. Just wanted to start way easy so everyone would give it a try and not feel intimidated.

I am so glad you are taking part. Our head count is now at three and growing. What great quilts we are going to have!

Sincerely,
kathi

Sending just one block would be silly as you can imagine, so we ask that a participant send at least one set of blocks. You may send as many sets as you want. I just chose a random number of sets for me to contribute. The more participants we have, the more sets I will make. I like the variety that comes from all the different contributors. The final cut off date for taking part and number of sets contributed can be determined by all of us. Shall we cut off the sign up and edits to number of sets by the 15th/20th? Let me know what you think.

Believe me when I tell you this is soooo easy. Check out the fabrics and make sure you like them. Participate in any or all based on that.

Ask a million questions, because these will be great exchanges for you to start with. You will be delighted you took part. I promise!

Sincerely,
kathi
