20. Quilt Block Exchange: Please trade with us!
Dec 3 2008, 1:28 PM EST | Post edited: Dec 3 2008, 1:28 PM EST
Dear Iva, Dottye, and everyone else,

Please add your desires as you decide. You will be able to change, add, or dropout up until the 15th or 20th of January (to be decided). A lot of people will make their blocks and then sign the list. This helps them determine if the block and fabric are awesome to them. Based on that, their number of sets is determined. They come back here and commit at that time.

January no sew: Recipe for Friendship by Mary Engelbreit 5" squares (six different squares to a set)

kathipink 3 sets
Jaimie 3 sets (eighteen 5" squares - 6 designs)

January sewing: Recipe for Friendship by Mary Engelbreit to make easy 5" unfinished four-patch blocks. (six different four patches to a set using a light and a dark per set)

kathipink 2 sets
Jaimie 2 set (twelve 5" 4-patch finished blocks)

February no sew: 2.5 noodles in Recess by American Jane (six different noodles to a set)

kathipink 2 sets
Jaimie 2 sets (twelve 2.5" x length of fabic strips, 6 designs)

February sewing swap: Ten-inch unfinished squares in Recess by American Jane. Pattern is Five Stripes alternating three colors of 2.5 strips within each square. (six different squares per one set)

kathipink 4 sets
Jaimie 4 sets (twenty-four three-color 10" blocks of five 2.5" strips)

Can't wait to get started!

Kathi..... went to the site you suggested; saw the fabrics; love them; I wanna play!! I'll do the same # of sets as you and Jaimie. Where do I add myself to the list... missed that somewhere. By the way, over the weekend I purchased a jellyroll called "Wee Play." Many of the fabrics look just like those I saw pictured under "Recess." Are Recess and Wee Play one and the same? Do you find this valuable?

Dear Iva,

I had never thought about those being two different lines, but they are. I don't think I knew the name Wee Play. American Jane is new to me, although I have admired it a long time. I think you could easily merge your fabrics for one quilt without a problem at all. I love the measuring tapes/rulers. I think those are great fabrics.

I started to add your name to the list, but decided to let you. If more join us, you may (or may not) want to change your number of sets. I want you to be sure and feel free to do that. To add your name, please just cut and paste that part of the previous posts. If you have any questions, just feel free to ask.

Thanks for joining us. We'll have a great exchange.

Sincerely,
kathi

Please count me in and for the same "sets" etc. as you have stated for yourself. I will have questions along the way, I am certain, but count me in for the long haul. Thanks!

What about Florals by Michael Miller for an upcoming month? They are a little wild, but very pretty. I cannot tell, this may be a general catagory because I see two different lines pretty much whithin the same color ways. Do you find this valuable?

or any designer fabric is fine with me. If this is not a favorite for someone, there is always the next month.

Some may not like the block style for the month and pass for that reason. That's another plus to the no long-term-commitment.

This is also a good time to remind our potential group that block design suggestions are appreciated. I'm not sure what level we are all comfortable with as far as stitching.

Another factor is: noodles, fat quarters, 2.5" charms, 5" charms, etc.

Let's all share our thoughts so we can meet the wishes of the largest number and have the greatest quilts!

Iva 4 sets

I'm assuming that the ultimate goal is to create enough sets for each participant? If that's the case, I'll add to my numbers as others sign on. You may regret the invitation to ask lots of questions because I have no clue what I'm doing here.... but I'm excited about the process!

Dear Iva,

Hopefully, the swap participants will far exceed the number of blocks needed for a quilt. I never count on swapping enough for a quilt for a couple of reasons. I may want these four patches for a border only???? I may want to add more squares of my own to emphasize a color I like??? These swapped squares may be an add-on to more complicated blocks I have done. Lots of options. You can keep your blocks forever, make a quilt, give them to a friend, whatever you desire. Lots of possibilities for these beautiful blocks. You'll have the hang of what's happening before you know it. Just keep the questions coming so we can help.

33. four patch possibilities AND five-inch charms

http://www.associatedcontent.com/video/9785/quilting_lesson_how_to_make_the_four.html

If you are not sure about a four-patch block, this U Tube will help. Since our blocks will be the same measurement as a five-inch charm, our strips will be 2.75" instead of the size shown on the U Tube video.

I will assume everyone is status quo unless I hear from you. I'm posting the swap wherever I can in hopes of generating more interest. Hope you will share the info, also, wherever you choose. Right now, the cut-off date will be January 15 for taking part. Items to me by January 25. Returns mailed by February 1.

Newcomer answers:

There will be two swaps each month. One swap requires no sewing. The second swap will involve stitching an easy peasy four-patch block for January. Each swap is your individual choice until our commitment on the 15th. Some will commit after they start stitching to see how easy things go. I will probably add or subtract some from my commitment as time gets closer.

January no sew swap: Recipe for Friendship by Mary Engelbreit 5" squares (six different squares to a set)
If you are trading three sets, you will send 18 squares. The six fabrics may be the same in each set if you choose. Only one set is permissible, too.

January sewing swap: Recipe for Friendship by Mary Engelbreit to make easy 5" unfinished four-patch blocks. (six different four patches to a set using a light and a dark per set) Each four patch within a set needs to be different. Each set of six blocks, however, can be the same if you choose to send more than one set.

By following these guidelines, no one will receive a duplicate square from you. You and I might choose to combine the same fabrics, but that is a long shot we'll have to live with.

All items to reach me by the 25th, so I can combine and switch to turn around and go out by the 1st.

When you take your package to be mailed, do not have it sealed yet. . .leave it open. Please ask the postman to weigh the package and determine the weight. Then hand him a duplicate envelope addressed to you and from you. Ask him to put the same postage on that empty envelope. I will use that envelope to return your traded/swapped squares. The same postage will make that just perfect after I pack the same number of squares back inside it. Please enclose that now-empty envelope with the squares coming my way. When you next see that empty envelope, it will be full of squares from your fellow swappers.
Let me know about further questions.

Maybe I'm missing something, but ... I just found this site and here's my question -- if everyone is trading the same fabric line, isn't everyone going to get the same fabrics they send in? I'm not familiar with the lines mentioned & don't normally seek out lines ... I'm sure you know what you're doing, so I apologize for this question in advance! In the past I've participated in swaps that were far more general -- either by color (all purples, etc.) or by design (all florals, etc.), so this one puzzles me. Do you find this valuable?

Your questions are very valid. To ensure high quality fabrics with blocks that integrate easily, the fabric is a certain designer per month. Each designer's line will generally contain 36-38 fabrics and upward. The chances that we combine the same fabrics will be minimal. If the block sets end up with a repeat, it won't be the end of the world either.

I did these exchanges for years on the older AOL boards. I never saw a duplicate. May have been sheer luck; but I'm hoping for it again.

Also hoping that you will join us. All of the lines are readily available online and probably in your local quilt shop.

Let me know what you think~~
