I was wondering if anyone machine washes and dries their material before you start a quilt? P I wash and dry everything. Seems to work. I am so afraid my quilts will shrink when they are done I take extra measures to use hot water and a hot drier.

Hi folks, just want to let everybody know that QBTB is one - if not THE - nicest Quilting store I've ever seen. I live in Germany and we don't have such nice stores here anyway but even when visiting the US I haven't seen such a cool store. And the staff is professional and friendly. Don't miss this one when you are around Panama City, Florida :-) Greets from the other side of the pond Christina

Glue sticks. I use glue sticks for about everything applique. I don't baste. Like the grandmothers flower garden. I glue the material on the hexagons, then just whip st. it up. Simple. I put my binding on empty thread spools and put the spools on a metal coat hanger that I take apart then once I put the spools on I work the wire back together. Just keeps it neat. I have to be organized to make the amount of quilts I make. I have a small room for a zillion goodies. It's still messy a little sometimes.

Did you start your mystery quilt? You could host one that is like the one in my profile quilt. It's hard but doable. Took me three months. I am not an advanced quilter yet. Getting there. It has hand stitching, machine and fpp. I am still recovering from the money it cost me to make it. I usually get a quilt done in about 2 weeks not 3 months. The borders took forever. I do not like hand applique. It looks nice but it is real hard for me. P

I had the fortune of visiting this store on Labor Day weekend, 2008. I had found the store, not through Quilt Sampler, but through the Central Virginia Tour De Quilt website. When I got to the store, I went about my search for fabrics to complete a new project. In my journey around the shop, I passed the front counter, and squealed with delight when I found the Quilt Sampler magazine. It went into my 'to purchase' pile. I continued around the store, finding more and more things to purchase. As I was getting ready to check out, I saw a framed copy of Quilt Sampler hanging behind the register. I asked, "Oh, are you in Quilt Sampler?" They chuckled and said, "We're not just IN it, we have the cover quilt!" And there, beside the framed Quilt Sampler, hanging on the wall, was the cover quilt. (I was a little bit embarrassed for not seeing it, but ... they laughed with me about missing the bright red (and white) quilt on the wall. I was just on sensory overload. ;)
Leaving the store, I made sure to stop by Kathleen's Fudge Shop (just a couple doors down). I was like a kid in a candy store ... (wonder why!). She had yummy homemade fudge, and some 'oldies but goodies'. It was hard to leave the store without spending nearly as much as I had on my fabric.
Delightful visit to both stores. Definitely a "must visit."

The Maple Leaf Quilt Show is now in its 37th year . It is the oldest quilt show in the state of Kansas and the only one of it’s kind. The quilt show is governed by an all volunteer committee that is organized as the Maple Leaf Quilt Show Foundation and is funded entirely by free will donations at the door.
The hours of the 2008 quilt show are Saturday, October 18 from 9 am - 5 pm and Sunday October 19, 10 am - 5 pm.
We are proud to present a free lecture by our featured guest, Helen Ericson, at 8:00 am Sunday October 19, 2008 in the Music Hall at Baker University. Limited parking for the lecture will be available in the lot behind the Baldwin City Elementary School at 7th and Baker.
Helen helped quilt show founder Enola Gish establish the first show and participated in more than 13 shows in the ensuing years. She will display a number of quilts in the show and present additional quilts at her Sunday morning lecture entitled “Tell Me About Sun Bonnet Sue” based on history and notes collected by her long time friend Betty Hagerman. She will be present at a table during the show to meet with visitors and will have books and patterns available for purchase including a very limited number of Betty Hagerman’s original book on Sun Bonnet Sue.
The theme of this year’s quilt show is “Sun Bonnet Sue”. Attendees will have an opportunity to vote on their favorite quilt in three categories, Favorite Theme Quilt, Favorite Wall Hanging and Favorite Bed Sized Quilt. There will be a cash prize of $50 for each of the Theme and Wall Hanging categories and $100 for the Bed Quilt category.
For more information about the quilt show and lecture, the foundation, and volunteerism contact Judy Masur at 785-979-8346. For information about this years quilt show, lecture details and showing your quilt visit the Maple Leaf Festival web site at www.mapleleaffestival.com or the home page at www.MyQuiltFabric.com .

You can make your own less costly light box with a large clear storage box and a under the counter type light , Just lay the light on the table put the box on top upside down plug in the light and trace away!

Another way is to use the under the counter type light, and a piece of medium strength plexiglass balanced on something like books. That way you avoid the "dimples" in the bottom of the storage box, and you have more direct light.

I haven't checked in for a long time, and hope I am permitted to tell you about this quilt show. If anyone will be in the Pittsburgh area the first weekend of August, I would like to invite you to attend this show presented by Quilt Company East, a quilters' guild in the east suburbs. On display for the first time in 20 years is the 79' x 8' "Pittsburgh Friendship Quilt" which features more than 32,000 2" squares signed by four U. S. Presidents and first ladies, local and national political figures & celebrities, the Steelers, Penguins and Pirates team members, and visitors to The Buhl Science Center during the late 1980's. Marilyn Doheny is the featured quilt instructor and lecturer, offering three classes and a lecture. There are several other classes to choose from, 15 merchant booths and more than 200 quilts on display. It's our very own 3-day quilt party!www.qulitcoeast.org

Needle size and brand preference is going to vary quilter to quilter. I gave up on those gnats eyebrow needles years ago as I can break them taking them out of the package. I have two favorites, both size 9. John James Quilting and Richard Hemming Betweens. Both are sharp, and sturdy enough to stand up to serious quilting action.

RE: tying knot in thread to begin quiltting

Hold your need in your right hand so it's pointing left. Hold the long tail of the thread in your left hand so it's pointing right. Lift your finger on the needle to hold the end of the long thread tail. Wind the thread around the need a few times with our left hand (just a few times, you want a small knot). Make the wound thread a little taut and put your needle finger over the wraps so they don't unwind. With your left hand, gently pull the need thru the wrapped thread, keeping your finger and thumb on it. When the thread is all the way thru, you'll feel a little knot between your finger and thumb - viola!
Trim the thread hanging out of the knot to about 1/2", and don't forget to pop the knot into the quilt sandwich. Use the point of your needle to fish the tail inside, too.
End a line of quilting with a small neat backstitch and "bury" a 6-8-inch long tail inside the quilt sandwich in an area that will be quilted or has been quilted (those quilting stitches will help keep the tail from going anywhere). To bury the thread, pull the needle and thread out, then poke it back into the same hole and come out somewhere else a few inches away - pull the thread into the quilt sandwich and repeat, so your thread tail is still long but is inside the quilt.
